Tips for Sea Kayaking
YouVistTips for first time sea kayaking. Kayaking in the sea is great fun because, unlike white water stuff, it is calming and quite relaxing. The idea of venturing out into the calm blue water on a kayak is very appealing, but safety must come first, especially if you’re taking children with you.
Kayaking is really quite a simple activity and once you have have practiced for a little while most people get the hang of it. It should be a relaxing, freeing experience which is reminiscent of flying!
SAFETY FIRST: RESPECT THE WATER
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) rescued over 300 kayakers and canoeists in 2014. They all got into trouble because of one (or a combination) of the following:
Some were not wearing a suitable personal flotation device and could not be seen because they had no reflective tape of their helmets, boats or paddles.
People did not check the weather forecast before they set off. Winds can make it hard to get back onto a beach, so make sure you have alternative places to get out of the water. Protect from the sun and take plenty of drinking water with you.
They did not tell anyone where they were going and at what time they would get back. or who was with them.
They didn’t have a way of calling help. A mobile phone, Personal Location Beacon (PLB), or VHS radio in a waterproof bag is an essential piece of equipment. It must be worn on your body or somewhere you can get to it easily if you find yourself in the water or in an sort of difficulty.
They were not wearing the right clothing, and had no personal details on them. You should always write your details with waterproof ink.
They’d had no training. Learn from an instructor how to get in and out of a Kayak, how to re-enter one should you fall out, how to be safe around water and basic first aid.
ALWAYS WEAR A LIFE JACKET– you’ll be warmer and it will help you to bob to the service, head first. You may need a wet suit it get’s very cold if the weather suddenly takes a turn for the worse. And of course you could capsize!
