Seeing and experiencing new things is exciting but all vacations and excursions need to be planned well. A traveller who is unprepared will undoubtedly encounter problems. Remember that most people you will meet on your travels will be friendly, honest and helpful – but there are always the few who are on the look out for travellers who appear unprepared.

Travel Safety Tips In no particular order:

• Airport Security - continue to travel light. Detailed advice is available on the DfT Website - http://www.dft.gov.uk/ including specific information about the way that hand baggage should be presented for scanning.

• Familiarise yourself with laws of the land and customs of the countries you visit. While you are in a country you are subject to its laws. Ignorance is no excuse.

• Carry only enough cash to see you through the day. Leave your passport in the hotel safe.

• Before going on a journey, even one lasting only a few days, always make two photocopies of your important information, including itinerary, passport, driving license and contact information for where you will be staying. Put all this information in two separate packets, then put one in your suitcase and leave the other with a close friend or relative. Make sure you keep the contact information for that friend or relative with you at all times. It makes sense.

• Make sure you keep warm in cold countries. Apart from head and extremities, remember that your neck, ankles, and wrists have to be wrapped up too – or you'll feel very cold indeed. Use a very strong sun block and lip sunscreen in the snow. Good quality sunglasses are also essential.

• Never accept gifts or packages from people you have just met to carry out of the country and never agree to post something for someone.

• Keep a couple of outfits separate, in your hand luggage, when travelling. If your suitcase or rucksack is lost the airline won't compensate you for at least twenty-four hours.  This will save you from having to buy new clothes.

• Make sure to pack a passport holder.  You know the ones  - they're slim, discreet, and very useful to protect yourself against pickpockets. You can slip your passport and money into the small pouch, and wear it under a sweatshirt or t-shirt so no one is able to get to it on the street.  Passports are worth a lot of money on the black market in many countries, so better to be safe than sorry!

• Make sure your walking are well broken in and totally water proof  - brand new boots just don't work.

• Take a photo of your luggage in advance. This makes it easier to identify your bag in case it gets lost. Many pieces of luggage look similar, and it can be hard to remember the features of your bag that make it different. Also, if you are travelling internationally, there won't be language barriers problems.

• If you are travelling through different countries, make sure you know what visas you'll need. Obtaining a visa does not necessarily give you the right to enter the country; there are many different types of visas. Consult the website of the embassy of the country where you are going.

• Make sure you can keep cool in hot countries (you'll need total block at high altitude) wear pure cotton clothes – synthetic materials don't work in very hot temperatures.

• Travelling long distances in cars is tiring and lack of sleep when driving is hazardous. It is best if you have more than one driver if you intend driving through he night. You can alternate sleeping and driving with the other driver. This will cut down many hours of the trip and the expenses of a hotel.

• Never leave your luggage unattended – never – I did that was about 25 years ago and my bag was blown up in some back room at the airport!

• To have a smooth trip through customs, keep a copy of your prescriptions with your pills. It is tempting to save space by repackaging your prescription pills, but then you have no proof that they are yours. Some countries have strict rules and will confiscate the medication, or worse, so carry documentation with you.

• Whenever you are travelling by car in the US, carry some drinking water and some washing water in the trunk of your car. If your car breaks down in a remote area, you must not be without water to drink. In case of an injury, you may need clean water for washing. A couple of gallon bottles of water in your trunk won't take up much room, but they will make a big difference if you need them.

• To sterilize baby bottles during a hotel stay, make use of the coffee maker! After rinsing out the bottle in the hotel sink, you can run the coffee maker to get piping hot, clean water to soak the bottle and its pieces in. After about 5 minutes, the bottle will be sterilized and ready to be used again.

• Save money with a trip to your local library. If your trip is going to be less than two weeks long don't bother buying expensive travel books. Libraries have as good of a selection as a bookstore and sometimes better. You can check out the books and guides you need, and return them to the library when you come home from your trip.

• Don't accept drinks from people you have just met – they could be laced with anything.

• Watch out for anything that seems too cheap –'special deals' should be approached with caution.

• Never, ever get involved with or take drugs  – some countries have extremely severe penalties for illegal drug use – including the death penalty.

• Avoid travelling alone (here's where the adventure travel shop can help!) if you are alone try to look confident, stay on main roads, look as if you know exactly where you are and where you're going.

• Don't wear conspicuous or expensive clothes. Do everything you can to blend in. No flash jewellery and don't show your cash.

• Don't forget to fill in your emergency contact details at the back of your passport – before your holiday starts.
